The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind covering Greater Manchester on Friday, October 23, as Storm Austen, the first named storm of the season, brings strong winds and heavy rain to large parts of the UK.
The warning is in effect between 10am and 9pm on Friday. It states: "A spell of strong winds, touching gales at times, associated with Storm Austen may bring some localised impacts."
Forecasters expect gusts of around 45 to 55mph during Friday daytime, with a spell of inland gales possible. The warning adds that, combined with locally heavy rain and many trees still in full leaf, there is potential for some power outages and travel disruption.
Affected Areas Across the UK
Other parts of north west England included in the warning are Blackburn, Cheshire, Halton, Lancashire, Merseyside and Warrington. The alert also covers areas of the East Midlands, East of England, London and south east England, south west England, West Midlands, Wales and Yorkshire.
The Met Office has listed potential impacts from the storm, including possible short-term loss of power and other services, coastal routes and sea fronts affected by spray and/or large waves, delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges, and some bus and train services affected with longer journey times.
Safety Advice and Preparedness
People in affected areas have been urged to check road conditions before setting off, prepare for a power cut by gathering essential items, and be aware of large waves if near the coast. The Met Office warns: "Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
The Met Office also recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area, as weather warnings can change quickly.
