Russia has deployed a heavily armed warship close to a NATO island in the Baltic Sea. The frigate Admiral Kasatonov, equipped with cruise and nuclear-capable Zircon hypersonic missiles, was seen off the coast of the German island of Fehmarn last week, according to reports from The Telegraph.
Warship Movement Near German Island
The ship, built in 2020, is reported to be one of the most advanced warships in Russia's possession, capable of long-range strikes and anti-submarine warfare. Fehmarn is a popular tourist spot, and its proximity to the ship highlights the heightened tensions in the region.
This deployment follows recent threats from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said last week that he was ready to retaliate against British and EU ships that tried to seize Russia-linked vessels.
Rising Tensions in the Baltic
The movement of the warship in the Baltic, a vital shipping zone, marks the latest friction between Russia and NATO. The Admiral Kasatonov is the second Russian warship to appear in the Baltic in recent weeks; the destroyer Admiral Levchenko was deployed in late July.
These developments come amid reports that Russia is building secret bases near its border with Ukraine to produce hi-tech attack drones capable of striking deep inside NATO territory. A recent US intelligence report has warned that Russia could launch an attack on NATO to test its resolve within weeks, possibly as a small-scale attack on Poland or a Baltic state.
Putin's Threat and Shadow Fleet
Britain and France have seized commercial vessels suspected of transporting oil and other goods on behalf of Russia in recent months, believed to be in violation of international sanctions. These ships, often sailing under obscure foreign flags, have been dubbed the Russian shadow fleet.
In response, Putin stated: "It's nothing but piracy and robbery. If this is done, we will be forced to respond in kind ... [Russia can retaliate] in any area where we see it as necessary and appropriate."
