Newcastle City Council has cancelled this weekend's Quayside Market, scheduled for Sunday, October 25, because of forecast high winds. The decision was taken with 60mph gusts expected as Storm Austen approaches the UK.
The market, held outdoors on the banks of the River Tyne, is a regular weekend attraction for people from Newcastle and the wider region, offering food from local businesses, drinks, art and gifts. Organisers said the cancellation was made in the interests of safety.
Council Confirms Cancellation
A post on Newcastle City Council's social media pages read: "Due to high winds this weekend's Quayside Market is cancelled. 60mph gusts are forecast so the market on Sunday 25 October 2026 has been called off in the interests of the safety of staff, traders and members of the public. We appreciate everyone's understanding."
Weather warnings have been issued for various parts of the UK for the coming days as Storm Austen moves in, and other outdoor events in the region may also be affected.
Christmas Market Date Announced
With the Quayside Market off, attention turns to the 2026 Newcastle Christmas Market, which is set to begin in the city centre on November 19. It will take over Monument, Grey Street, Grainger Street, old Eldon Square and Nelson Street.
