Met Office yellow wind warning for 38 UK areas with 70mph gusts

The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning for parts of the UK, with gusts of up to 70mph possible in some areas this week. The warning covers 38 areas across London, south west England, Wales and the West Midlands.

Warning details and timing

The 12-hour warning comes into effect at 12am on Friday, October 23. It warns of "damaging gusts and transport disruption" as strong west to northwesterly winds spread across southern parts of England and Wales.

Gusts of 50-60mph are possible, with some coastal or exposed areas potentially seeing 70mph or more. However, the Met Office notes there is uncertainty in where the strongest winds will be.

Potential impacts

The Met Office warns that impacts could include damage to buildings, a chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris, longer journey times or cancellations, power cuts, and large waves causing danger to life.

Strong winds are expected to develop from Thursday, with the potential for heavy rain making travel more difficult. Winds are likely to ease late morning into the early afternoon.

Forecaster's view

Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree said: "An area of the forecast we're particularly focusing on is the development of a potentially deep area of low pressure that could cross the UK overnight on Thursday and through Friday."

He added: "It has the potential to bring some strong winds, though the location of the strongest winds will be determined by the low position. At this stage, people should keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared for some unsettled weather at the end of the week."

The 38 areas affected include Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, Southampton, West Sussex, Bath and North East Somerset, Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole, Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Isles of Scilly, North Somerset, Plymouth, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Torbay, Wiltshire, Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, Vale of Glamorgan and Herefordshire.
