The Met Office has issued weather warnings covering 64 areas of the UK ahead of Storm Austen, which is expected to bring strong winds and rain from Friday. Households are being urged to prepare for potential power cuts and travel disruption.
Warnings in Place Across England, Wales, and Scotland
Much of southern England and Wales, covering 38 areas, has been placed under a yellow weather warning for strong winds and rain from midnight on Friday until 2pm. Four specific areas—Devon, Cornwall, and Plymouth—have been given a rare amber warning for extreme winds, in force from 3am to 10am on Friday.
Meanwhile, 26 areas of Scotland are under a yellow weather warning for rain, which could bring flooding and disruption. This warning starts at 6am on Friday and ends at 3am on Saturday.
Advice for Households and Drivers
The Met Office warned: "Storm Austen bringing a spell of strong winds with transport disruption likely and possible damaging winds in some areas." It advises residents to check if their property could be at risk of flooding and to consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.
"People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It's easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items," the Met Office said.
Safety Guidance for Amber Warning Areas
On the amber warning, the Met Office urges drivers to slow down to minimise the impact of wind gusts, be aware of high-sided vehicles and caravans on exposed roads, and give cyclists, motorcyclists, lorries, and buses more room than usual.
Coastal residents are advised to be aware of large waves, keep dogs on a lead near cliffs, and call 999 for the Coastguard in an emergency. Those experiencing a power cut should call 105 from their mobile to report it.
The Met Office said winds of 50-60 mph are likely, with some coastal or exposed areas possibly seeing 70 mph or more, particularly over parts of southwest England. Winds are expected to ease slowly during Friday afternoon.
