The Met Office has revealed which areas of the country face rain on Thursday as the current summery weather prepares to come to an end. New maps from the forecaster show downpours battering parts of Scotland and Northern England as they move across the country in an easterly direction.
Worst-hit areas
The worst-affected areas are expected to be the Scottish Highlands, where showers could reach levels of up to 16mm/hr by 5pm on Friday. Elsewhere, Manchester, County Durham, and the Lake District are all forecast to get 0.5mm/hr of rain throughout the evening.
The Met Office explained that Thursday could bring "scattered showers" as temperatures start to cool from the warm high 20sC that much of the country has been enjoying.
Forecast for the week
Its forecast for Thursday to Sunday adds: "A mixed few days to come, with sunny spells and scattered showers expected each day. Staying rather breezy, with a much cooler feel compared to of late."
Deputy chief forecaster Mark Sidaway added: "The forecast is showing potential for more rain than much of the UK has experienced over the last few weeks.
"However, it looks as though amounts of rain for many will be fairly modest, and won't balance out the shortfall that we have recorded this summer. It’s still possible that some areas of the south will miss out and see little or no rainfall."
