The Met Office has named 14 areas across the UK that will face heavy rain on Bank Holiday Monday, with the wettest conditions expected during the morning before much of the country turns drier and brighter later in the day.
Heavy rain and thunder risk
The Met Office said: "A cloudy start with outbreaks of rain and showers, this heaviest across the north, with a risk of thunder. Turning drier and brighter through the afternoon. Breezy. Average temperatures."
Forecast maps show rain developing across several parts of the country during the early hours of Monday. At around 1.30am, showers are shown across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and southern England.
By 5am, the rain becomes more widespread, with heavier bursts affecting eastern parts of Britain. Conditions remain unsettled into the morning, with the 9am map showing some of the most significant rainfall across eastern Scotland and eastern England.

- Aberdeenshire
- Angus
- Fife
- Perth and Kinross
- Scottish Borders
- Northumberland
- County Durham
- North Yorkshire
- East Riding of Yorkshire
- Lincolnshire
- Norfolk
- Suffolk
- Essex
- Kent
Areas around Aberdeen appear to be among those facing particularly wet conditions, while a band of rain stretches southwards along the eastern side of the country.
Improvement later in the day
The picture is expected to change considerably as Bank Holiday Monday progresses. By 1.45pm, the forecast map shows much of England and Wales largely clear of rain, with only scattered showers remaining elsewhere.
The improvement continues into the evening, with most of England and Wales forecast to remain dry at 6pm. Showers are instead shown across parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, while further rain remains out over the Atlantic.
By 8.15pm, the vast majority of England and Wales is forecast to remain dry, although the Met Office says conditions will stay breezy with temperatures around average for the time of year.
