The Met Office has warned that 11 areas in Scotland and England will face heavy rain on Saturday, August 1, as temperatures drop closer to average after a summer heatwave.
Friday is expected to be “chilly” for many with a scattering of showers in the North, according to the Met Office on X. This follows scorching weather on Wednesday when temperatures reached 35.2C, marking the seventh day of 2026 with temperatures at or above 35C.
Drought conditions persist
The warm conditions have led to half of England and the whole of Wales suffering from drought, due to low rainfall and high temperatures. The Met Office said Friday’s temperatures are “expected to be much closer to average across most of the UK, and even slightly below average for northern Scotland.”
Saturday forecast
Saturday will bring showers for many, but the forecaster noted there will also be plenty of dry weather. The forecast for August 1 states: “Remaining breezy with showers in the north on Saturday. Largely dry with warm sunshine further south.”
In Lancashire, rain is expected to start in the early hours and clear just after midday. North Yorkshire is likely to see lighter rain throughout the day. Scotland will experience most of the rainfall, with many areas forecast for showers across Saturday. In Stirling, there is a 60% chance of rain for most of the day, while Renfrewshire faces an 80% chance of showers in the morning.

- Scotland: Highland, Moray, Argyll and Bute, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, Renfrewshire, Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Dumfries and Galloway
- England: North Yorkshire, Lancashire
The majority of the rain will fall in Scotland on the final days of the Commonwealth Games.
