The Met Office has issued a warning for Scots, highlighting a "risk of lightning and thunder showers" today (August 4) as heavy downpours continue across the country. With the miserable weather predicted to persist throughout the week, carrying an umbrella is essential.
Heavy Rain and Potential Flooding
Weather maps have turned Scotland blue as continuous bands of rain are set to move across the country on Tuesday. Some areas could see up to 32mm of rain, and the Met Office has cautioned that surface water issues may arise.
Meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth noted: "Intense rainfall on Tuesday morning. A lot of cloud around, some heavy downpours as well as this rain pushes northwards throughout the morning. The heaviest rainfall is likely to be across more western areas into Tuesday morning, but as that bumps into the more easterly winds that could bring more intense rainfall for the eastern areas as well."
This forecast follows a BBC Scotland warning that the west of Scotland could experience nearly half a month's worth of rain by the end of the week.
Risk of Thunder and Lightning
While temperatures are expected to stay in the mid-to-high teens, many Scots may feel a chill compared to last month's warm spell. Shuttleworth added: "Turns a little bit more showery in nature into Tuesday afternoon, but there is a risk of some thundery downpours as well. Also a risk of lightning into the afternoon and some intense gusty winds as well."
Although the rain is a welcome break from the dry spell, the meteorologist warns that heavy rainfall in a short period could cause issues with surface water and road conditions.
Driving Advice
The Met Office urges motorists to drive safely and plan ahead if they must drive during heavy rain. Drivers should use dipped headlights if visibility is seriously reduced. A good rule of thumb: 'if it's time for your wipers, it's time to slow down'—even in moderate rain, this keeps everyone safe.
Wednesday Forecast
Wet conditions are set to continue on Wednesday (August 5). Shuttleworth explained: "On Wednesday, a very similar story. The winds turning around that area of low pressure. So, the focus of the rainfall could return in from the north, pushing into more central areas of Scotland later on Wednesday. A wet picture for the next few days."
Temperatures will be cooler on Wednesday, with northern Scotland seeing highs of 15C due to strong winds. Aberdeen is expected to be the warmest area, reaching 19C, while Glasgow and Edinburgh will sit around 17C with cloudy, showery conditions and possible sunny spells between rain.
