Met Office Issues 11-Hour Yellow Wind Warning for Liverpool

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Liverpool, with strong winds expected across the region on Friday, October 23. The alert comes as Storm Austen is set to hit the UK, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the North West.

The yellow warning for wind comes into force at 10am on Friday and lasts for 11 hours until 9pm. The alert reads: "A spell of strong winds, touching gales at times, associated with Storm Austen may bring some localised impacts."

Warning Extended to Merseyside

Weather warnings were originally in place in southeastern areas and in Wales, but the Met Office has extended its alert to Merseyside. Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities are likely to be affected by spray and/or large waves, with potential delays on roads and short-term losses of power. Public transport could also see disruption, with journeys possibly taking longer.

The Met Office said: "While the winds across the warning area are not expected to be as strong as those further south and west, a spell of inland gales is possible with gusts around 45mph to 55mph during Friday daytime."

Potential Impacts and Advice

In combination with locally heavy rain and many trees still in full leaf, there is potential for some power outages and travel disruption. The Met Office advised: "Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary."

People are encouraged to prepare for potential power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items. For those on the coast, the Met Office warned: "Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea. Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

Areas Under Alert

The warning covers several regions, including the East Midlands, East of England, London & South East England, North West England, South West England, Wales, West Midlands, and Yorkshire & Humber.
