The Met Office has confirmed 'remarkable' temperatures are on the way before the weather turns wet and windy. The nation is currently recovering from a summer which saw UK temperatures resting in the 30s for weeks on end. Five heatwaves hit the country this meteorological summer.
Summer 2026 was the warmest in the UK since records began in 1884, according to figures from the Met Office. The average temperature across June, July and August was 16.5C, beating the previous high of 16.1C set only last year.
Notably warm Tuesday
Despite October being just around the corner, the Met Office has now said that the weather will be 'notably warm' for this time of year on Tuesday (September 29). Temperatures are expected to rise to as high as 27C.
A low pressure system in the Atlantic will bring warmer air from Europe causing the spike in the autumnal temperature. However, it will turn unsettled as a weather front gradually moves from west to east late on Tuesday and Wednesday (September 30).
Speaking to the Press Association, Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon noted that a high of 27C is expected in London on Tuesday. He said this is 'notable for this time of year' and it will feel 'fairly unseasonable for many'.
Rain and wind arrive
“By later on Tuesday evening, we start to see the arrival of rain to western areas, where some western upslopes could see rainfall totals of between 20 and 30mm of rain.
“Particularly thinking about areas to the south west of England, parts of Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, that front of rain will gradually move eastwards Tuesday night and into Wednesday,” he said.
Despite conditions changing for the worse as the day goes on, Mr Dixon said that the temperature will remain 'fairly high' on Tuesday night going into Wednesday, with a minimum of 19C in some places.
He added: “An overnight low of 19C again would be notable for the time of year and could feel a touch uncomfortable for some, particularly as we're in late September.”
Wet and blustery Wednesday
The Met Office spokesperson stated that many areas of the UK will see rain on Wednesday. Sadly it's going to be a 'fairly wet and blustery day' for those who have to venture outside for work and other reasons.
Gusty winds are possible and there is a chance of 'some very large waves for some western coastal areas', Mr Dixon said. The winds may reach 50mph in a dramatic change to the nation's weather fortunes.
Around 10mm of rain is expected in some places, with in excess of 40mm possible in some spots. Thursday (October 1) and Friday (October 2) will be days of 'sunshine and showers' and 'mixed conditions'.
More settled conditions will come over the weekend due to high pressure building in the UK. Meanwhile, The Met Office said on X, previously known as Twitter, that the week promises 'remarkable temperatures, big waves and a bit of heavy rain too'.
With speculation growing that the UK could see its first named storm of autumn, this remains unlikely. The last officially named UK storm was Storm Dave, which hit the UK over the Easter weekend in April.
