The Met Office has identified 20 counties in Scotland and Northern Ireland that will experience significant rainfall on Saturday, with some areas potentially seeing over 10cm of rain. Meanwhile, temperatures in southern parts of the UK could climb to 32C on Sunday.
Rainfall amounts and affected areas
The heaviest rain is expected in the north-west of Scotland, where some locations could receive over 75mm, and a few exposed upland areas might exceed 100mm in 48 hours by early Sunday. The Met Office forecasts "outbreaks of heavy rain through the day" for Scotland and Northern Ireland on Saturday, while most of England and Wales will stay dry with sunny spells.
The 20 counties facing heavy rain are all in Scotland or Northern Ireland, including Sutherland, Ross-shire and Cromartyshire, Inverness-shire, Argyllshire, Perthshire, Stirlingshire, Dunbarton, Renfrewshire, Buteshire, Ayrshire, Aberdeenshire, Wigtownshire, Kirkcudbrightshire, Lanarkshire, Dumfriesshire, Antrim, Down, Londonderry, Tyrone, and Fermanagh.
BBC Weather forecast
The BBC Weather forecast echoes the Met Office, predicting "blustery rain for much of Scotland and Northern Ireland" on Saturday. It states: "A dry and sunny day for much of the UK tomorrow with some patchy cloud at times. Staying windier in the far north with spells of blustery rain for much of Scotland and Northern Ireland."
The BBC adds: "Staying unsettled and wet across northern and central areas on Sunday, but drier and sunnier in the south with only the odd afternoon shower. Monday looks to see any showers in the north gradually ease. It will then be a dry and settled day with sunshine for most."
Heatwave next week
Despite the wet start, another heatwave is expected next week. The Met Office says temperatures should surpass 30C on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday in southern regions, meeting the heatwave threshold. An official heatwave is declared when temperatures hit the threshold for three consecutive days. The threshold is 28C in the south-east and drops to 25C further away.
