Met Office Issues Six-Hour Thunderstorm Warning for Northern Ireland
The Met Office has issued a six-hour yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across much of Northern Ireland, effective from midday to 6pm today, 30 June 2026. The warning covers counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Londonderry, and Tyrone, with forecasters warning of slow-moving storms that could bring heavy rainfall, flooding, and travel disruption.
Potential Impacts: Flooding, Travel Delays, and Power Cuts
According to the Met Office, the thunderstorms could lead to temporary flooding of homes and businesses, difficult driving conditions due to spray, standing water, or hail, and possible power cuts. The forecaster stated: "Following overnight rain, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across much of Northern Ireland. These showers and thunderstorms will become slow-moving for a time this afternoon, leading to the potential for some large rainfall accumulations to build up in a few places."
Rainfall Accumulations and Hazards
The Met Office predicts 10-15mm of rain in less than an hour for some areas, and potentially 25-30mm in 2-3 hours. Hail and lightning are additional hazards. Residents are advised to prepare a flood plan and emergency flood kit if their property is at risk of flash flooding.
Safety Advice from the Met Office
The Met Office urged: "If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter (such as a car). Do not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning. If you are on an elevated area move to lower ground."
