A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Japan at around 2am local time (6pm UK time) on Sunday, shaking parts of the country and registering a lower 5 on Japan's seven-level seismic intensity scale in Ibaraki Prefecture. The quake was recorded at a depth of 77.6 kilometers.
Shaking in Tokyo and Eastern Kanto
The tremor rattled Tokyo and the eastern Kanto region, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). A lower 5 intensity indicates strong shaking that can make it difficult for people to move and may cause unsecured objects to fall.
What a Lower 5 Intensity Means
According to the JMA, during a level 5 tremor, “most people feel fear and feel the need to hold onto something. Dishes on shelves and books on bookshelves may fall.”
