Cardzone Sheffield closure confirmed with 50% off sale

Cardzone has confirmed that its Sheffield branch will close for the last time on Saturday, September 5, with remaining stock now being sold at half price. The discount was initially advertised at 30% but has been increased to 50% to help clear the store before its final day.

Nine stores already closed

Reports indicate that nine Cardzone stores have already closed, with the Sheffield location set to be the latest to shut by September 5. The chain has closed a number of other branches in recent years, including a store in Newport in July and a branch in Didcot this year.

Cardzone previously closed several stores in 2024, joining other high street names that have shut locations in recent years.

Lease risks and industry challenges

In its latest financial statements, Cardzone said: "The business leases the majority of its locations, which comes with inherent risks. Most stores operate under leases lasting less than five years, and there are no guarantees that lease renegotiations will be successful."

The wider industry has struggled recently. Cardzone's rival Clinton Cards shut 38 of its then 179 shops, around 20%, in 2023. Last year, River Island and New Look were among high street fashion stores to close locations, while Poundland shut more than 150 stores in a major restructure.

Industry pressures and recent collapses

Industry figures have warned of challenges facing high street stores, including changing customer habits due to the rise of online shopping and increased costs such as energy and business rates.

Claire's Accessories collapsed into administration earlier this year, resulting in the closure of all 154 of its standalone sites in April.
