Jet2 has issued an urgent warning to passengers about items banned from luggage, including vapes, power banks and e-cigarettes. Serious safety concerns have been raised about these items, which can catch fire, being packed in hold luggage.
Even when placed in hand luggage, passengers are putting them in the wrong place — overhead lockers. There have been a number of incidents where they have caused fires on aircraft. If they are in hold luggage, it might not be noticed until it is too late and it can endanger the whole flight.
Flights turned round over packed items
A number of flights have been forced to land after a passenger made crew aware of packing the items in checked-in luggage — and they have also burst into flames in cabins. Jet2 said it wants to target customers still jetting off for late-summer breaks, urging travellers to double-check their bags before heading to the airport.
Restricted items list
Items with serious restrictions include power banks, e-cigarettes, personal electronic devices, lithium batteries, hoverboards and balance wheels. Jet2 is advising customers that power banks and e-cigarettes must be carried in hand luggage and must not be placed in hold baggage.
Power banks and e-cigarettes should be placed under the seat in front of them rather than in the overhead locker, it said. When travelling with permitted items containing lithium batteries, Jet2 is also reminding customers to ensure they are turned off, packaged securely with any exposed terminals protected against short circuits, and carried in hand luggage.
Damaged devices not permitted
Damaged personal electronic devices or lithium batteries are not permitted on board. Small vehicles powered by lithium batteries, such as hoverboards and balance wheels, also cannot be carried in either checked or hand baggage.
David Hills, Chief Customer Officer at Jet2, said: “Lots of customers travel with everyday items such as power banks and e-cigarettes, so this is a simple but important reminder to check where they are packed before setting off for the airport. These items are common, but they do need to be carried correctly, and doing so helps us keep everyone safe while they travel to enjoy their well-deserved holidays.”
