Home Bargains recalls Lay's crisps over undeclared allergens
Home Bargains recalls Lay's Sour Cream & Dill Crisps

Home Bargains has urgently recalled a popular brand of crisps over a potential health risk. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is asking anyone who bought Lay's Sour Cream & Dill Crisps from the discount retailer to return them immediately. "If you have bought this product, do not eat it," the FSA said.

Shoppers told not to consume the snack

In a recall notice, Home Bargains also told shoppers "do not consume" the American potato snack as they contain "undeclared allergens". A recall does not mean the product is off the shelves for good – customers are simply asked to return the items.

Which packs are affected?

Only 125g packs of Lay's Sour Cream & Dill Crisps bought from Home Bargains are affected. If the packet has a best before date of up to and including October 31, take it back for a refund. No other Lay's products, flavours, sizes or variety packs have been recalled.

Why are the crisps recalled?

The FSA said the crisps could contain allergens not listed as ingredients. These include milk and wheat, which pose a health risk to anyone allergic or intolerant to dairy or gluten. Around 20 million people in the UK are allergic to dairy – symptoms include uncomfortable gas, bloating, nausea, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. People with coeliac disease, an autoimmune disorder that sees the body attack the small intestine if exposed to gluten, are also warned to avoid the crisps.

No confirmed illnesses

The FSA did not specify if anyone has been sickened from eating the recalled crisps. The recall follows a similar one last month, when Doritos issued an urgent recall after discovering some Chilli Heatwave packs were stuffed with Tangy Cheese flavoured crisps. The spicy flavour does not contain milk, while the cheesy one does, the FSA said.
