Good Morning Britain has issued a major warning to anyone driving a diesel car, with the show revealing that the UK could see its highest-ever pump price on Friday. The announcement was made by hosts Ranvir Singh and Kate Garraway, who said that prices will keep rising while global instability continues.
Kate Garraway said: "The RAC has told this programme that we could see diesel hit its highest-ever price today." The warning comes as fuel prices continue to climb, with the cost of filling up a tank having "pretty much more than doubled" because of the war in Iran, according to GMB correspondent Jonathan Swain.
Fuel costs on the rise
Jonathan Swain explained that the rising fuel prices are having a knock-on effect on the cost of goods transported around the country. He added: "It means that all the goods on here that get transported around the country, those prices go up as well and we feel them in our pockets."
The show revealed that a tank of petrol for a 55-litre family car now costs £95.33, while the diesel equivalent is £108.76.
Impact on businesses
Business owner Stephen, who runs a fleet of lorries, has seen his fuel bill go up an extra £4,000 per week because of the price rises. He has been forced to pass part of that cost onto his customers.
"For the first time in my company's history, we've been forced to implement a fuel surcharge," Stephen explained. "So, we're splitting the earnest straight down the middle."
He added: "Every time my cost rises, we set a percentage down the middle. So, half of that burdens on me, half of that burdens on my customer. And then that burden presumably gets passed onto their customer, the end consumer, people at home watching."
More pain at the pumps
Jonathan Swain declared: "The prices are continuing to go up which means we are going to feel more pain at the pumps." The warning comes as drivers face the prospect of record fuel costs, with the RAC telling the programme that prices will keep rising while global instability continues.
