Rochdale Council has issued a warning after fireworks were set off in Healey Dell Nature Reserve, sparking fears of wildfires similar to those seen across the Pennines. The council has coordinated a response with community safety, environmental health, and partner organisations.
Coordinated response
Councillor Shah Wazir, representing the Healey area, raised concerns about frequent late-night fireworks, which he said cause health and welfare issues for residents and animals. The council has passed a motion against late-night fireworks and placed conditions on sales, but the problem persists.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue and police have been brought in to assess risks and enforce regulations. Public safety messaging will also be issued to deter further incidents.
Council statement
A council spokesperson said: “The council is acting on residents’ complaints and pulling together a coordinated response involving our environmental health, environmental management, and community safety services. We are also liaising with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue to establish any fire risks while working closely with Greater Manchester Police to share intelligence and carry out enforcement.”
The spokesperson added: “Fireworks in an area like Healey Dell not only cause distress to residents, but also to the local wildlife and there is potential for damage to the local ecology that is vital for the area to thrive.”

Recent wildfires at Dovestone Reservoir and across the country have heightened concerns. The council hopes people will learn from these incidents and avoid putting themselves and others at risk.
