Broken manhole cover causes chaos on Cardiff road

Police closed a section of Rover Way in Splott on Thursday, October 8, after a broken manhole cover caused a hazard to motorists, with a travel company claiming more than ten cars were damaged.

Road closure and diversions

The adjacent road, Ffordd Pengam, was closed in the vicinity of Tesco Extra whilst the damaged manhole cover was cordoned off. Cardiff travel company MET Executive Travel warned other drivers to stay away from the area after one of its cars suffered two tyre blowouts.

Pulling into the nearby Tesco car park, the company claimed that "within ten minutes, two more cars arrived with the same problem. Within half an hour, there were seven cars parked up with tyre blowouts." They further stated on Facebook that the number had risen above ten cars on Thursday morning.

Council response and repair

A Cardiff Council spokesperson said: "The Council received reports of a damaged manhole cover on Rover Way (on Thursday morning). Highways staff attended the site at approximately 8.30am to make the area safe."

The area was cordoned off with cones and a temporary cover was put in place before teams returned to make a permanent repair of the manhole cover later in the evening.
