Blackpool Airport has issued a warning to visitors planning to attend the Blackpool Airshow this weekend, urging them to remove litter and food waste to avoid attracting gulls, which can pose a hazard to aircraft during low-level flying displays.
Large crowds expected
Last year, 350,000 people attended the event, and similar numbers are expected to descend on the seaside town on Saturday and Sunday. The annual airshow features some of the world's top civilian and military aircraft, including the RAF Typhoon display team and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
Spectators can also enjoy displays by The Red Devils, the official parachute display team of the British Army, and Aerosuperbatics Wingwalkers. Other aircraft in the lineup include US Fighters, the Harvard, and The Ravens.
Gull hazard warning
Those heading to Blackpool are being urged to dispose of any rubbish or leftover food responsibly, particularly spectators watching from the nearby sand dunes. Blackpool Airport warns that gatherings of gulls can present a hazard to aircraft, especially during low-level displays.
To help reduce this risk, visitors are asked not to feed the gulls and to take all litter and food waste away when they leave. Reducing food sources helps discourage birds from gathering close to the airport.
Airport official's plea
Jim Johnson, Operations, Safety and Compliance Manager at Blackpool Airport, said: "It's fantastic to welcome so many people to enjoy the Blackpool Airshow each year and it is the most exciting week in our calendar. We would like to ask everyone, particularly those watching from the nearby sand dunes, to support us by not feeding the gulls and by taking all litter and food waste away when they leave."
"Limiting the availability of food helps reduce the number of gulls in the vicinity of the airport, lowering the risk of bird strikes during the flying displays. We are grateful for everyone's cooperation in helping to keep the event safe for pilots and spectators alike."
Event details
Blackpool Airshow takes place from 10am to 5pm on both days. It is free to attend and no tickets are required. Visitors can also explore the Air Show Village, open from 12pm to 7pm each day, located along the promenade and on the Tower Festival Headland, featuring traders, vendors, exhibits, and food and drink stalls.
