British Airways flight BA711, bound for London Heathrow, was forced to divert to the nearest airport after declaring a medical emergency mid-air. The Airbus A321neo landed safely in Luxembourg before later continuing its journey to the UK capital.
Emergency declared over French airspace
The flight had departed Larnaca International Airport in Cyprus shortly before 7am EEST (5am BST) on Sunday. The incident unfolded as the jet entered French airspace, where flight tracking data shows it was cruising at 34,000 feet when the squawk 7700 code was transmitted — an international code indicating a general emergency.
Safe landing and onward journey
An immediate descent was triggered to the nearest airport. According to AirLive, the jet reported a "medical emergency" on the flight. At around 10am CEST (9am BST), the aircraft landed safely in Luxembourg.
British Airways confirmed to the Mirror that the diversion was due to a medical incident on board. The jet departed Luxembourg at 12.50pm CEST (11.50am BST) and arrived at London Heathrow at 12.51pm BST.
