The AA has urged Scottish drivers to take extra care this weekend as two named storms bring heavy rain and strong winds to much of the country. Storm Austen is expected to bring heavy downpours to parts of Scotland on Friday, followed by Storm Boelo with another spell of strong winds.
Weather Warnings in Place
A yellow weather warning for rain is in place across parts of southern, central and north-east Scotland until the end of Friday. A further yellow and amber warning for wind comes into force from Saturday evening, October 24, to Sunday, October 25.
Drivers are advised to check weather forecasts and traffic updates before setting off, as difficult conditions are expected to cause potential disruption to journeys.
AA Advice for Motorists
The AA is urging drivers to slow down, leave extra space between vehicles and give vulnerable road users more room as the storms move across the country. Strong gusts can make driving difficult, particularly on exposed roads and bridges, and sudden changes in wind strength can catch drivers off guard when leaving sheltered areas or passing large vehicles.
High-sided vehicles, caravans and trailers are particularly vulnerable to crosswinds, while cyclists and motorcyclists can be pushed sideways by powerful gusts.
Expert Warning on Conditions
An AA expert patrol has issued an urgent warning to drivers getting in their cars this weekend. Lee Morley explained: "Don't underestimate the conditions. A journey can change very quickly when strong winds and heavy rain hit, particularly on exposed stretches of road. Before setting off, check the latest weather and traffic information and give yourself more time for the journey."
Lee added: "Sudden gusts can catch drivers by surprise, especially when coming out from behind buildings or trees, crossing exposed bridges or passing high-sided vehicles. Give cyclists and motorcyclists plenty of extra room too."
Safety Tips for Wet Roads
Heavy rain can reduce visibility and tyre grip, while standing water increases the risk of aquaplaning. The AA warns that stopping distances on wet roads can be at least twice as long as on dry roads, meaning drivers should reduce their speed and leave a greater gap between themselves and the vehicle in front.
Motorists are also being urged not to drive through floodwater if they do not know how deep it is, as it can conceal hazards beneath the surface. The expert said: "If you encounter floodwater and you don't know how deep it is, don't take the risk. Turn around and find another route."
Before setting off, drivers should check their tyres, lights and windscreen wipers, and ensure their mobile phone is charged. Making sure there is enough fuel or battery charge to cope with delays and diversions is also recommended.
The AA has urged motorists to continue checking weather updates throughout the weekend and be prepared to change their plans if conditions worsen. Lee urged: "Storm Austen is affecting journeys today, but drivers also need to keep an eye on Storm Boelo this weekend. Check the forecast before setting off and be prepared to change your plans if conditions deteriorate."
