Two-thirds of Brits would rather take a train than fly between UK cities, with research showing rail travel costs 71% less than flying, saving passengers an average of £147 per journey. The findings come from a survey of 2,000 adults and data from the Rail Delivery Group's 'Clearing the Air' report.
Train vs Plane: Cost and Convenience
Despite expectations of higher costs and longer travel times, travellers are more likely to opt for train travel between cities. Only 13% would choose to fly. Over half (54%) believe trains offer greater choice, flexibility, and reliability, while 61% view rail as more environmentally friendly.
Data from the rail industry's LENNON system and OAG air fare data revealed that a London–Manchester train journey cost an average of £45 in 2025, though passengers expected £88. A flight between the two cities cost £115 before extras like seats and luggage. Including additional costs such as transfers and airport changes, flying costs 71% more on average.
Time Savings and Productivity
Passengers travelling between London and Newcastle can save an average of an hour by taking the train. For a business traveller making the journey weekly, this saves a full working day per month. The report estimates 93% of a rail journey can be spent working, reading, or relaxing, compared with 33% for a domestic flight when factoring in check-in, security, and boarding. Train passengers gain an average of three hours more usable time per journey.
Industry and Government Support
Jacqueline Starr, executive chair and chief executive officer at Rail Delivery Group, said: "This research highlights the benefits rail can offer passengers, from lower costs and lower carbon emissions to more time that can be spent, relaxing or staying productive. With frequent services connecting cities across Britain, rail offers a convenient, flexible and attractive way to travel."
The research coincides with the Government's Great British Summer Savings scheme, which includes a temporary VAT reduction on eligible family attractions and days out. Andrew Stokes, director at VisitEngland, added: "There's something special about visiting the treasures of our nations and regions by train. Whether it's a cultural city break, a set jetting stay or a trip to one of our picturesque coastal or rural destinations, travelling by rail offers an easy, efficient and environmentally friendly way to explore more and enjoy spectacular scenery along the way."
