Whitesands Beach in Pembrokeshire has been named the 31st best beach in the world for 2026 by Big 7 Travel, making it the only Welsh beach to feature in the annual ranking. The Blue Flag beach outranked destinations in Hawaii, New Zealand, St Lucia and Australia, though popular Welsh spots like Rhossili and Barafundle did not make the list.
Why Whitesands Impressed
Known for its golden sands, turquoise waters and coastal scenery, Whitesands has long been a favourite with locals and tourists. The team behind the rankings praised its location on the Pembrokeshire coast, noting that it proves "you don’t need tropical weather to enjoy a stunning beach." They highlighted the rolling surf, golden sands and rugged cliffs as making it a favoured spot for families, hikers and surfers alike.
The beach offers ideal conditions for paddling, swimming and diving in summer, while autumn and winter bring windy conditions that attract surfers. Nearby facilities include a cafe and shop, and the beach is just a couple of miles from St Davids, where visitors can find more shops, restaurants and amenities. Dog owners should note that restrictions are in place until September.
Visitor Reviews and Warnings
Some visitors have pointed out potential downsides. One Tripadvisor reviewer described it as a "great beach if you are into surfing etc," but noted the "downside" that "it does get very busy even on a blustery day." Another warned that while it is "beautiful and extensive," it is "dangerous for its currents (there is a sign at the entrance)" and famous for surfers and incredible sunsets.
Despite these cautions, the beach remains a hit with tourists. One holidaymaker wrote: "What an absolutely phenomenal beach. The beach itself is so clean, the water was crystal clear and there was no seaweed. You can go out for quite a way and it was just unbelievable.. The family loved it, couldn't believe how quiet it was and even when it got a little busier later in the day it was still so pleasant, and this is all before the walks. The mountain walks around the beach where quite simply breathtaking. Some lovely places tucked away, we even found a cove we had all to ourselves. £6.50 for the parking was a small price to pay for something so amazing. We will be coming back here as soon as possible."
