Do Not Travel Warning Issued to Rail Passengers in Wales Amid Extreme Heat
Wales Rail Warning: Do Not Travel Amid Extreme Heat

Rail passengers in Wales are being advised to travel only if necessary as extreme weather alerts remain in force, with train services cancelled and further disruption expected. Red and amber weather warnings for exceptional heat began on Monday, June 22, and will last through Thursday, June 25. Temperatures are forecast to reach 37°C across most of the country, with some areas potentially hitting 38°C to 40°C.

Services Suspended on Key Routes

Transport for Wales (TfW) has suspended all trains on two major routes due to the predicted severe weather. Services between Pontypridd and Cardiff Bay were cancelled from 5am Monday until 11:59pm the same day. Additionally, trains running in both directions between Heath Low Level and Penarth were suspended from 5am Monday through to 8pm on Saturday, June 27.

A replacement shuttle will operate, serving Coryton, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, Birchgrove, Ty Glas, and Heath Low Level in both directions. Passengers heading to Cardiff Central or Rhymney should change at Heath Low Level and walk to Heath High Level for onward connections.

Network Rail and GWR Advice

National Rail has warned that high temperatures can cause overhead cables to stretch and droop, trigger trackside fires, and lead to rail buckling. Speed restrictions may be imposed, causing delays or cancellations. Jake Kelly, deputy chief executive of Network Rail, said: “Extreme heat can have a significant impact on the railway, so safety must come first. We’re asking passengers to check before travelling on Tuesday, and only travel if absolutely essential on Wednesday and Thursday if they are going to, from or within the red warning zone as temperatures are expected to peak. If you do need to travel, please plan ahead, allow extra time and take necessary precautions, such as carrying water, to stay safe.”

Great Western Railway (GWR) has also advised passengers to travel only if absolutely necessary on Wednesday and Thursday. GWR will modify services during the hottest parts of the day, with a reduced number of trains and slightly longer journey times. The updated timetable will be available only on the day of travel. Ticket restrictions have been relaxed: tickets for Wednesday and Thursday may also be used on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.
