Three bank holidays remain on the calendar before the year draws to a close. Most employees get time off during bank holidays, with schools also closed.
Substitute bank holiday for Boxing Day
This year, people throughout the UK will observe a "substitute" bank holiday as Boxing Day "moves". Since Boxing Day, December 26, falls on a Saturday this year, the bank holiday will be marked on the following Monday, December 28, instead.
Next year, both the Christmas Day and Boxing Day bank holidays will "move" as they land on a Saturday and Sunday respectively. All four nations will recognise Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, and Monday, December 28, as bank holidays.
Scotland's additional holiday
Meanwhile, Scotland has an additional bank holiday to anticipate in 2026. The St Andrew's Day bank holiday takes place on Monday, November 30.
In a standard year, Scotland observes nine bank holidays, England and Wales enjoy eight, and Northern Ireland benefits from 10.
