Time Out has crowned Stockport's Underbanks and Central district the coolest neighbourhood in the North of England, placing it fourth in the publication's 2026 list of the 11 coolest UK neighbourhoods. The top three spots went to Newington Green in London, the Cathedral Quarter in Belfast, and Govanhill in Glasgow.
Creative hub under the viaducts
Tucked beneath historic viaducts and grand architecture, the area has evolved into one of the North West's most exciting cultural hubs. Time Out praised the Greater Manchester town as a 'place-to-move-to for the Second City's creatives,' citing cheaper rent and 'serious suburban tenacity'.
The district boasts a thriving continental café culture, including viral queue-magnet Sticky Fingers, artisan bakery Yellowhammer, and legendary morning spot Auntie Lou's. On TikTok, @aelfryth said Sticky Fingers has 'the best pastries in Stockport', while @property_sense said Yellowhammer has 'the best sourdough.' For matcha lovers, Yon Orange serves different types of matcha with bakes and coffee.
What to see and do
For shopping, Time Out recommends 'kitsch '70s time capsule' Squound for furniture, followed by a trip to Market Place to browse 'vintage haven' 20th Century Stores, and Still Life for gifts. When hunger strikes, Gatto pizzeria has monthly specials with freshly made pizzas, which visitors call the 'best pizza in Greater Manchester'.
For a 'taste of the Caribbean,' head to OnDahRocks for authentic Jamaican food, with live DJs, cocktails, and a bottomless brunch menu for £37.50 per person for 90 minutes of cocktails and food. Another spot is Mekong Cat, named the ultimate 'slurpy noodle haven'. 'One of our favourite places in Stockport,' wrote @userconcretemike, and @downhill156 praised the 'cracking food'.
For drinks, The Magnet is a popular choice on the r/stockport Reddit thread, with users praising its rooftop seating, 'amazing selection of beer' and 'reasonable price'. The Blossoms, a dog-friendly staple known for its classic historic interior, live music, and popular weekly quiz nights, is another local favourite. Ye Olde Vic was crowned a 'Stockport gem' on Tripadvisor, with customers praising the vast drink selection, cosy open fire and 'traditional' pub feel.
Transport and local views
Central Stockport and the historic Underbanks area boast exceptional transport services. The state-of-the-art Stockport Interchange, which opened in 2024, runs up to 164 bus departures every hour. Stockport Railway Station gets you to Manchester Piccadilly in less than 10 minutes, with direct lines to London or Birmingham.
On Reddit, people shared their opinions on the 'cool' neighbourhood. @LFCTricksters noted that 'independent shops and decent bars are popping up where it used to be a bit grim,' but asked if people thought the gentrification was positive. 'Underbanks was 90% empty shops when I moved to Stockport,' replied @misha_non-penguin. 'Would be hard-pressed to find anyone who thinks the current vibe is worse.'
Another user said: 'We aren't losing the Stockportian character; it is simply evolving from what it used to be, and I think we need it to be honest.' A third added: 'I'm not sure it's gentrification so much as shops catering for modern needs and tastes.' @Theunsunghero7790 wrote: 'What has happened down there is a miracle.'
