Sea Lanes Canary Wharf, London's first 'natural water' lido, has become a popular destination for open water swimming, welcoming more than 13,000 swimmers in its first month since opening in June. The venue offers a 50-metre open water pool with lanes for all abilities, eco-friendly saunas, and a lakeside dining area.
Facilities and Atmosphere
The lido features fast, medium, and slow lanes, making it accessible for swimmers of all skill levels. Two wood-crafted saunas, powered by renewable energy, overlook the pool through floor-to-ceiling glass windows. An all-day dining area with al fresco seating and a community clubhouse add to the venue's appeal.
Despite being primarily for lane swimming, Sea Lanes maintains a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere, with swimmers of all ages enjoying the water.
Visitor Experience
During a recent visit amid London's heatwave, the pool temperature was a brisk 19°C, providing a refreshing contrast to the near-30°C air. The open-water setting offers a sense of freedom not found in traditional chlorine pools, with swimmers able to enjoy the skyline views while navigating occasional patches of algae.
The open-plan design makes the facility easy to navigate, with well-equipped changing facilities for those heading back to the office. The bar and kitchen allow visitors to extend their stay, with brunch options and cocktails available.
Growing Demand for Outdoor Swimming
As heatwaves become more frequent, demand for safe outdoor swimming spaces has increased. Lidos fill quickly during hot weather, leading some to turn to rivers and canals, which can be dangerous and polluted. Sea Lanes director Harry Smith expressed that the response has exceeded expectations, stating, "Welcoming more than 13,000 swimmers in our first month has been an incredible milestone and a fantastic endorsement of what we set out to create."
He added, "From day one, our ambition was to create a destination where people could reconnect with nature, build confidence in the water and enjoy the physical and mental wellbeing benefits of open water swimming."
Practical Information
Sea Lanes is open Monday to Friday from 6am to 9pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 7am to 7pm. Visitors can choose between a swim-only session at £10 or a swim-and-sauna experience at £18. More information is available at sealanescanarywharf.co.uk.
