Drivers in Scotland could save more than 30p per litre on diesel depending on where they fill up, with the cheapest recently updated price found at a garage in Kilmarnock.
The price of diesel has exceeded £2 a litre at hundreds of Scottish filling stations, with drivers facing sharply different costs depending on where they fill up. Some of the highest prices include diesel coming in at 204.9p per litre in Aberdeen and 209.9p in Ballater.
Record high prices across the UK
According to the RAC, these are the highest prices ever recorded in the UK, beating the previous high of 199.09p per litre of diesel in June 2022. RAC head of policy Simon Williams said the average price had reached a "new uncharted territory", with the cost of filling an average family car now almost £110.
Additionally, he warned the rising prices would be a "financial blow" to households and businesses, with increased transport costs also likely to be passed on to consumers. Simon stated: "This spells pain not only at the pumps for drivers, but for everyone who buys goods or services that rely on diesel lorries and vans; undoubtedly these increased costs will be passed on to consumers."
Cheapest diesel in Scotland today
However drivers could save money by shopping around, with the latest figures revealing some of the cheapest places to buy diesel across Scotland today (Monday 28 September). As of the time of writing, the cheapest diesel in Scotland, according to Fuel Finder UK, can be found at the Gulf Garage located in the Burnpark Services on Ayr Road in Kilmarnock.
A litre of diesel there will cost 167.7p, according to the latest figures on the website. Although there are some stations on the site with a lower price, it shows that their price has not been updated in over a week.
The price at the Gulf Garage in Kilmarnock is a stark difference to the prices at the Gulf Garage in the southside of Glasgow, however. The Aikenhead Road filling station is charging 201.9p per litre of diesel.
City-by-city price comparison
For drivers in Scotland's biggest cities, like Glasgow, the prices tend to be slightly higher. For those in Glasgow, Tesco and Asda seem to be the cheapest places to purchase diesel. With the Tesco on Dalmarnock Road in Rutherglen coming in at 193.9p a litre of diesel, and Asda on Duke Street charging 192.7p per litre of diesel.
Meanwhile in Edinburgh, Asda on New Mart Road is the cheapest of the recently updated garages, charging 185.7p per litre. Additionally, for those who have a Costco membership, they will be able to purchase a litre of diesel for 189.9p in both the Glasgow and Edinburgh locations.
In Dundee, Asda comes in at the cheapest price for a litre of diesel. Almost all of the Asdas in Dundee are charging 192.7p per litre of diesel, with this price being available at the Asda on Myrekirk Road and the Derwent Avenue locations. In Aberdeen it's Asda once again that offers the cheapest, with the Jesmond Drive location charging customers 198.7p per litre of diesel, at the time of writing.

With diesel prices varying significantly across Scotland, it could pay for drivers to check the Fuel Finder UK website before filling up. While the cheapest prices can be found outside the big cities, checking local stations before setting off could help drivers save money on a tank of diesel.
