A Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Dublin experienced severe turbulence over Turkey, injuring 12 people and hospitalising eight. The aircraft, flight QR017, landed safely at Dublin Airport shortly before 1pm on Sunday, where emergency services met it.
Passengers described a terrifying five-second ordeal during which flight attendants were thrown into the air. One passenger, Paul Mocc, told RTE that people 'hit the roof' and food and drink scattered across the cabin. Another passenger, Eileen, said her partner had to hold her down as she was napping without a seatbelt.
Dublin Airport confirmed that six passengers and six crew members reported injuries. All passengers were assessed before disembarking, and eight were taken to hospital. The airport operator, daa, said it continues to provide assistance to those on board.
Passengers praised the cabin crew for their handling of the situation, despite some being seen limping with bandages. One traveller, Tom, noted on social media that the captain was slow to explain but the air stewards were very helpful.
