In the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, one of South America's largest protected areas spanning 8,000 square miles, pink river dolphins arc through dark waters and herons flash overhead. More than 600 bird species inhabit the reserve alone. It is here that Pure Amazon, an A&K Sanctuary, journeys along the river. Launched in 2025, this design-led vessel offers a floating safari through the Amazon's mirror-like waterways.
Getting There
Iquitos, the gateway to the Amazon Basin and the nearest airport city, is reachable only by plane or boat. A two-hour flight from Lima is the easier option. A&K Sanctuary representatives meet guests at the airport and provide a shared transfer along a one-track road to Nauta, passing tuk-tuks. After about two hours, guests reach the riverbank in the heart of the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, then take a short skiff ride to the Pure Amazon.
Onboard Style and Facilities
The three-floored vessel accommodates a maximum of 22 guests and boasts the highest staff-to-guest ratio of any riverboat in the Peruvian Amazon. Interiors feature pale creams, sea blue, jungle green, and dark woods. Locally woven textiles add color. Facilities include two bars, a map room and library, a treatment room for massages and facials, a compact gym with treadmills and weight machines, and a top deck with a hot tub and sun loungers for stargazing.
Itinerary and Wildlife
Guests sleep on the riverboat, allowing all-access to the river and rainforest. Expert naturalists, including native Amazonians Ulber and Javier, guide excursions. Activities include sunrise skiffs through creeks with monkeys, spotting Amazonian pink dolphins, piranha fishing, and jungle treks. Visits to Nueva Arica, a river village supported by A&K Philanthropy, are included. Wildlife sightings depend on the season; during high-water season, attention is drawn to the canopy and water.
Food and Drink
Mornings offer buffets of pancakes, chorizo sausages, and omelettes. Lunch is an abundant spread. Dinner features four-course suppers with local produce such as braised beef with yuca mash, Amazonian paiche, and tree nut tart with camu camu coulis. Homemade truffles await guests after dinner.
Cabins
There are twelve cabins: ten suites and two singles. They are spacious with modern design, soft green shades, glossy woods, and local textiles. Bathrooms are roomy with amenities. Panoramic windows offer views of the riverscape.
