British holidaymakers heading to Portugal are being warned of significant travel disruption as transport workers plan a major strike on Wednesday, June 3. The walkout, involving airline cabin crew, rail employees, and public transport staff, is expected to cause chaos at the start of the summer holidays.
Reports indicate that up to 500 flights could be cancelled, while trains, ferries, city metros, and buses are also likely to be affected. The strike is in opposition to proposed government reforms, and unions are using it as a negotiating tool.
Cabin crew for TAP Air Portugal, along with its regional operators Portugália and SATA, are expected to see up to 79% staff absence. Other carriers, including Ryanair and easyJet, may also face staffing problems.
Passengers whose flights are delayed or cancelled due to the strike may be entitled to assistance or reimbursement, depending on the airline's terms and conditions. However, strikes beyond an airline's control, such as airport or baggage handler walkouts, may not be covered. Travel insurance policies should also be checked.
Booking a flight after strike action has been announced means passengers are unlikely to receive compensation. Travelers are advised to check for any strikes affecting their airline, departure, and arrival airports before travelling.
