Metallica's M72 world tour is set to descend on Cardiff's Principality Stadium this Sunday, June 28, with gates opening at 5pm. The band's four-year-long tour, which began in Amsterdam in April 2023, has already played to four million fans globally. For concertgoers and city visitors alike, Cardiff Council has announced a series of road closures around the stadium to manage crowds and ensure safety.
Early Closures from 7am
From 7am on Sunday, Scott Road and Park Street will be closed to facilitate preparation of gate five and protect queuing fans. These early closures are essential for stage setup and crowd control ahead of the evening event.
Full City Centre Road Closure from 3pm to Midnight
At 3pm, a comprehensive road closure will take effect, lasting until midnight. The following roads will be closed:
- Kingsway from its junction with North Road to its junction with Duke Street
- Cowbridge Road East from its junction with Cathedral Road to its junction with Westgate Street
- Tudor Street from its junction with Clare Road to its junction with Wood Street (access for residents and traders permitted via Fitzhamon Embankment)
- Plantagenet Street and Beauchamp Street from their junctions with Despenser Place to their junctions with Tudor Street (access for residents and traders permitted)
Additionally, the following roads will be closed in their entirety: Duke Street, Castle Street, High Street, St Mary Street, Caroline Street, Wood Street, Central Square, Westgate Street, Quay Street, Guildhall Place, Golate, Park Street, Havelock Street, and Scott Road.
Bus-Only Routes and Post-Event Closures
Station Terrace and Guildford Street from the junction with Newport Road to the junction with Churchill Way will be restricted to buses only during the closure times. This measure ensures reliable bus access to satellite points in Churchill Way. Penarth Road will be closed 30 minutes before the concert finishes and for up to an hour after, on safety grounds, to manage train passengers arriving at and departing from the station. Station Terrace will also close for a short period to allow Queen Street Station to operate safely for 90 minutes after the event ends (approximately 10.15pm to 11.45pm).
Civic Centre Access Controls
Access to part of the Civic Centre will be controlled throughout the day, with entry allowed only for event parking, limited commuter parking, loading, and access to private car parks. Roads affected include King Edward VII Avenue, Museum Avenue, City Hall Road, College Road, and Gorsedd Gardens Road.
According to Cardiff Council, these measures are designed to ensure the safety of all attendees and residents. Drivers are advised to plan alternative routes and allow extra travel time.
