Thousands of passengers are jetting off from Manchester Airport this bank holiday Monday, making the most of the extra time off work. While the school holidays are drawing to a close this week, September getaways remain extremely popular among those without children or school-age kids.
Busiest summer on record
This summer was predicted to be the busiest on record for the airport. Although August figures are yet to be released, July was the second-busiest travel month experienced by the airport, with more than 3.3 million passengers using the northern travel hub.
At the start of the summer, the airport predicted that more than 5.7 million passengers would fly in and out between Friday, July 17 and the end of the holidays on September 1. Palma in Majorca is set to be the most popular destination this summer.
Advice for passengers
September marks the start of 'shoulder season' when holidays are often cheaper, and it is also a popular time to travel to escape the height of summer heat.
Earlier this summer, the airport issued guidance to passengers to ensure their journey runs as smoothly as possible. This included arriving at least two hours before a scheduled flight, and three hours for a long-haul flight, to allow sufficient time for check-in and security. Passengers have also been reminded of hand luggage rules, such as not packing liquids greater than 100mls, multi-tools, or large squishy toys in hand baggage. Lithium batteries are banned from hold luggage.
