Manchester Airport has clarified the dress code for its Escape Lounge after a TikTok video sparked discussion among travellers. The five-second clip, which has received more than 180,000 views, showed two women removing pin curls from their hair before being allowed into the lounge.
Viral video and passenger reactions
Several TikTok users claimed they had faced similar issues while travelling through Terminal 2. The Escape Lounge is located airside, beyond security, and promotes itself as offering a "premium" airport experience.
Lounge amenities and dress code
The lounge is open to all travellers and aims to make passengers’ time at the airport “an escape to remember”. Guests can enjoy food and drinks, comfortable seating, Wi-Fi, live flight information and areas to relax or work before their flight.
However, passengers must follow a dress code to gain entry to the lounge. Manchester Airport confirmed that certain clothing and accessories are not permitted under its Smart Casual requirements.
Prohibited items and enforcement
The airport said prohibited items include football or rugby tops, sports team shirts and shorts, clothing featuring potentially offensive slogans or motifs, and fancy dress. Clothing that exposes the midriff or upper thighs is also not allowed.
Manchester Airport also confirmed that hair rollers and pin curls must be covered with a head scarf. The spokesperson said these requirements are part of the Smart Casual dress code and are clearly outlined in the lounge’s terms and conditions.
The Escape Lounges section of Manchester Airport’s website states that staff can refuse entry to anyone wearing clothing they consider unsuitable. Passengers refused entry under this rule are not entitled to a refund.
