Littlehampton East Beach in West Sussex has been named one of England's best beaches by train operator LNER, boasting Blue Flag status, 16 fish and chip shops within a 15-minute walk, and a free-to-enter amusement park with over 15 attractions.
Beach and Blue Flag Status
The beach comprises East Beach and West Beach, but it is East Beach that has earned the Blue Flag award for its golden sand, shingle, and clean waters. It is ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and family activities like sandcastle building and ball games. The beach is bordered by large greens for picnics and games.
Harbour Park Amusement Park
Just minutes from East Beach, Harbour Park offers free entry with pay-per-ride options or wristbands. Attractions include rides, water flumes, small coasters, arcades, indoor soft play, trampolines, bumper boats, adventure golf, and a pirate-themed escape room. A TripAdvisor reviewer said: 'Great funfair, particularly for younger children. We went with our 3 year old and she was able to go on most rides if she was accompanied. You could easily spend half a day in the funfair.'
Promenade and Landmarks
The promenade features colourful beach huts, ice cream parlours, and Britain's longest bench at 324 metres. The East Beach Cafe, designed by Thomas Heatherwick, resembles a giant piece of driftwood and is nicknamed 'the beached whale'. One visitor commented: 'Just had to visit this lovely cafe right on the beach front. The structure itself is amazing. Greeted by friendly staff and seated straight away. We ordered breakfast, and it was delicious, and my chai latte was the best I’ve ever had.'
Fish and Chip Shops
Littlehampton has 16 fish and chip shops within a 15-minute walk, including The Beach, Fred's Fish and Chips, The Menu, and Littlehampton Fish & Chips. LNER's research highlighted this variety as part of the town's appeal.
Sunshine and Accessibility
LNER named Littlehampton East Beach one of England's best beaches reachable by train, citing over 242 hours of sunshine between May and July. The beach is 0.7 miles from Littlehampton train station, with regular services from London Victoria, Brighton, and Portsmouth. Bus routes like the 700 Coastliner and ample car parks provide additional access.
