What Makes a Dream Dog Walk?
Dog owners have defined the ultimate walk for their pets, based on a poll of 1,800 people. The ideal outing lasts one hour and seven minutes, includes 16 sniffing opportunities, and offers water for splashing. Owners prefer open fields, woodland, or parks, with sniffs at lampposts, tree trunks, and flowers, plus the chance to meet about three other dogs.
Safety and Convenience Matter
While 38% prioritise their dog's enjoyment over their own, many consider safety and convenience. 55% want walks where their dog is safe, 37% prefer quiet, uncrowded routes, and 36% seek wide open spaces. A third (33%) favour routes close to home or with accessible bins.
Boredom and Guilt
46% of owners have grown bored of their regular walks, and 30% believe their dogs feel the same. Eight in ten have felt guilty about not being more adventurous. On average, owners are willing to travel seven miles from home for a great walk, especially if it passes dog-friendly cafes offering water and treats.
Key Considerations Before Heading Out
Weather conditions (61%), ground heat for paws (61%), and the likelihood of encountering other dogs or livestock (48%) are top concerns. While 36% feel very confident identifying risks like steep terrain or coastal hazards, 56% are only somewhat confident.
Top Dog Walk Destinations
The research, commissioned by Animal Friends Pet Insurance, includes a map of the UK's best routes. The top three destinations are the Lake District, New Forest National Park in Hampshire, and the South West Coast Path in Devon and Cornwall. The full top ten list features Northumberland Coast, Sherwood Forest, Richmond Park, Holkham Beach, Snowdonia, Castleton, and Grizedale Forest.

Jen Hipwell, head of veterinary services at Animal Friends Pet Insurance, advises: "Before heading out, it's always worth checking your route in advance, as well as the weather and any local conditions that could affect your plans, particularly during periods of hot weather. Pack for your dog's needs, whether that's plenty of fresh water, treats, a lead, a favourite toy or somewhere comfortable to rest." She adds that the map helps owners find walks suited to their dog, so they can explore new places safely and confidently.
