Hiker Claims Carmarthenshire Fans Walk 'Better Than Pen y Fan'
Hiker: Carmarthenshire Fans Walk 'Better Than Pen y Fan'

An avid hiker has sparked debate by claiming a circular walk in the Bannau Brycheiniog is 'even better' than the popular Pen y Fan peak. Dan Butler, who shares his favourite UK walks on TikTok, praised the Carmarthenshire Fans (Bannau Sir Gaer) for their dramatic scenery and lack of crowds.

Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales at 886 metres, is a magnet for walkers, even on the hottest days. But Butler argues that the Carmarthenshire Fans, located in the western Black Mountain range, offer a superior experience. "I've said it, this walk is better than Pen y Fan," he said in his video. "Absolutely gorgeous. You have to try it out."

A Hidden Gem in the Brecon Beacons

The Carmarthenshire Fans feature peaks like Picws Du and Fan Brycheiniog, with breathtaking views over Llyn y Fan Fach and Llyn y Fan Fawr. Butler described the area as "hands down my favourite part of the Brecon Beacons." The escarpment is known for its glacial lakes and has been called one of the 'most dramatic' walks in the UK.

Butler shared details of his 15.3km circular route, which takes in Waun Lefrith, Picws Du, Fan Brycheiniog, and Fan Hir. The walk involves roughly 745m of elevation gain and takes 5-6 hours to complete. "Expect steep climbs, exposed ridgelines and some genuinely incredible viewpoints," he advised. "Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a lead."

Walkers Agree: It's Better

Commenters on his TikTok video echoed his sentiments. One wrote: "it is a stunning place plus less humans about." Another said: "Did this yesterday- shame it was grey but it's lovely - long though." A third simply declared: "100% better..... Absolutely beautiful place."
