A travel guide has highlighted a Scottish route claimed to be "10 times better" than the North Coast 500 (NC500). The Hebridean Way spans nearly 200 miles across 10 islands, from Vatersay to the top of the Isle of Lewis, and includes vibrant beaches and striking Atlantic coastline.
Route praised as less crowded with more views
Sharing the road trip on TikTok, travel guide Louie wrote in the caption: "I can't believe people choose the NC500 over this road trip... it's insane." Describing the route as "less crowded" and boasting "more amazing views", Louie is urging travellers to explore The Hebridean Way.
While the route is designated for walking or cycling, it can be done in a car, campervan or motorhome along the main A-roads. There are also many single track roads that connect and overlap with the route.
Island hopping and ferry crossings
Visit Outer Hebrides has a handy interactive map on its website detailing the walking and cycling routes, as well as highlighting landmarks and pit stops for food and sleep. Visitors will need to use two ferries during the journey - from Barra to Eriskay and from Berneray to Harris - as well as travel across six causeways to reach the final destination.
To get to the Outer Hebrides, travellers must take a ferry or fly at the beginning of the trip. This can include flying to Barra Airport, which lands on Traigh Mhor beach.
Landmarks and Europe's best beach
During the Hebridean Way, visitors can explore historical landmarks such as the Callanish Standing Stones, Barpa Langass, and a variety of beaches. This includes Luskentyre Beach on the Isle of Harris, which was crowned Europe's best beach earlier this year.
Describing the route, Visit Scotland writes: "The Outer Hebrides are a unique part of the British Isles and a visit there always stays with you. The Hebridean Way is this chain of wild isles' contribution to our wonderful collection of long-distance trails. Connecting beach, bog, hill and machair, the route really does showcase the landscape."
Many people on social media were keen to try the route. One TikTok user wrote: "My girlfriend and I did nc500 this year really want to do it again next year but don't want to feel like a repeat, this would be perfect." Another added: "This trip looks amazing." A third person shared their own experience: "I've walked it and it's absolutely stunning, but the best thing about the Outer Hebrides is the natives, nicest people I've ever met."
Another traveller noted landing on Traigh Mhor beach was the "best thing ever" about their recent trip. However, one user joked about keeping the route a secret, saying: "Well done bloody tell them then. Gatekeeping should be normalised!."
