A former British soldier leading a private search for missing teenager Jay Slater has discovered a pair of sunglasses he believes may belong to the 19-year-old. Christopher Pennington, who moved to Tenerife in 2006, found the glasses with one lens missing near where Jay's phone last pinged. He has handed them to Spanish police, who are continuing their investigation.
Jay vanished on 17 June after leaving an Airbnb in Masca, Tenerife. Spanish authorities called off their two-week search, but his family have enlisted expert volunteers. Pennington criticised the official search for sticking to established paths, saying: 'This area has not been searched properly.'
The ex-reservist drove from Papagayo nightclub to the remote holiday home, describing the journey as 'extremely dangerous' on dark, winding roads. He theorises Jay may have tried to descend a ravine, mistaking the coast for closer than it is. Pennington said: 'You can only imagine that he's looked down at the coastline in the distance and thinks it's a lot closer than it really is.'
TV investigator Mark Williams-Thomas has spoken to Ayub Qassim, one of the last people to see Jay. The search continues with Pennington, Jay's father Warren and brother Zak, and a sniffer dog named Caperucita.
