The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for Portugal, warning British tourists about risks including street crime, festival safety, and swimming pool hazards as the summer holiday season begins.
Festival and Event Safety
The FCDO statement said: "Many large events are held in Portugal each year. Follow the advice of police and local authorities when attending events." Tourists are urged to "take care of your valuables if attending a festival or large concert" and to consult the festival travel checklist for more advice.
Street Crime Alert
The warning highlights the risk of street crime in crowded areas. The FCDO advised: "Be alert to the risk of street crime. Take care on public transport and at crowded bus and tram stops. Thieves use distraction techniques and often work in teams." Travellers should look after their passport, money, and personal belongings when travelling, checking in luggage at the airport, or arranging car hire. The FCDO recommends not carrying all valuables in one place and keeping a copy of the photo pages of your passport somewhere safe.
Accommodation Security
The FCDO advises: "Make sure your accommodation has adequate security. Lock all doors and windows at night and when you go out. If you're concerned about the security of your accommodation, speak to your tour operator or property owner, or contact the local police force." Local police forces include the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) for cities and the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) for smaller towns and rural areas.
Swimming Pool Precautions
The FCDO updated its advice for swimming pool safety: "Always supervise children. Keep small children within arms-reach in and around swimming pools, even if they can swim or there is a lifeguard present. Be particularly vigilant of children if you are staying in a villa with a private pool."
Passport Requirements
Portugal follows Schengen area rules, meaning your passport must have a "date of issue" less than 10 years before the date you arrive and an "expiry date" at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.
