Flight attendant warns against flip-flops on planes - here's why

A flight attendant has warned passengers against wearing flip-flops on planes, saying the footwear can prove dangerous and cause injury, despite appearing comfortable.

Safety concerns with flip-flops

Sille, a flight attendant, shared her travel clothing tips, urging passengers to skip certain items for safety reasons. She stressed she had no intention of judging anyone's wardrobe choices, but wanted to ensure everyone's safety and well-being in all possible situations.

"I see this on almost every flight, and I promise it's not a judgment. Your feet and body will thank you," she said, as she detailed the things she'd "skip" when travelling on a plane.

Among the footwear that could prove hazardous on planes are flip-flops. She wrote: "Flip-flops. Feet swell, cabins get cold. And imagine running to your gate in flip flops."

Other items to avoid

Sille also advised against wearing shorts or crop tops. "First of all, the aircon is brutal," she said. "Secondly, you don't ever want your naked skin near those seats." Opting for full-length trousers and a proper t-shirt is strongly recommended, and packing a jumper in case the temperature drops is also a wise move.

She cautioned that "your body swells at altitude," so if you opt for overly tight jeans, you may find yourself feeling incredibly uncomfortable, questioning whether looking stylish was worth the discomfort, particularly if paired with a crop top.

She pointed out that wearing a single thin layer and hoping for the best is far from ideal, as "planes can be freezing, even to hot destinations," so it's worth packing at least a jacket or jumper to keep warm, which can also be worn on the return journey.

Recommended alternatives and public reaction

Sille recommended "Something comfy, covered and in layers," reiterating that she "works on planes so you don't have to learn this the hard way".

One commenter wrote: "Totally agree!!!! Flip flops and Crocs should be banned from flights." When asked to elaborate, they replied they're "not appropriate footwear".

Another defended them, however, saying: "I always wear flip flops, BUT I have specific aeroplane socks that I wear on the plane, except to the bathroom, a different pair of flip flops go on for that, and then they get put in the trash. They are throwaway ones."

A third contributed: "People wear flip flops to make it easier at security, but honestly, that's so disgusting! I can't imagine my bare feet touching those floors. Always socks and sneakers when I fly!"

A further commenter went on to share additional habits they believe passengers should abandon while aboard a flight. One user commented: "Also, stop wearing strong perfumes when flying. It can trigger allergies, migraines, and respiratory issues in a confined cabin space. Wear perfume or cologne when you're outside the plane."

Another revealed that they opt for "linen trousers with elastic waistband, a vest top and a long shirt for layer, but I do wear sandals."
