An Essex woman has died in Spain after a devastating wildfire left her and her partner in a critical condition. Lisa Fryett, from Canvey Island, passed away on July 28, surrounded by her family in Spain. Her partner, Simon Batchelor, remains hospitalised in a critical condition.
Wildfire in Bédar and Los Gallardos
The couple had been staying near the villages of Bédar and Los Gallardos when the blaze broke out. They were rescued from the mountainside the day after the wildfire erupted and were taken to a Spanish hospital in a critical condition.
Family's tribute and fundraiser
An update on a GoFundMe page set up to support the family confirmed Lisa's death. The post reads: "Our hearts are completely broken, and there are simply no words to describe the pain we are feeling. Lisa fought so incredibly hard, and we are so grateful that her loved ones were able to be by her side, surrounding her with love until the very end."
The fundraiser has raised over £65,000, which will be used to give Lisa "the beautiful send off she truly deserves." The family expressed gratitude for the support, saying: "Every donation, every share, every message and every prayer has meant more than words can ever express."

A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."
