The Nao Santa María, a replica of Christopher Columbus' flagship, has arrived at Liverpool's Royal Albert Dock, giving visitors the chance to board the historic vessel. The ship is visiting the city as part of an international historical outreach tour, offering a glimpse into the lives of explorers from around 500 years ago.
Construction and Background
Built by the Nao Victoria Foundation in Punta Umbría, Huelva, the Spanish ship was supported by the Huelva Provincial Council and Cajasol Foundation. Construction began in January 2017 and took 14 months, with the replica completed in March 2018.
More than just a replica, the Nao Santa María serves as a floating museum and ambassador for the maritime, cultural and tourism heritage of Huelva, Spain. It celebrates the era of great oceanic expeditions and the voyages that played a major role in changing world history following the European discovery of the Americas.
Visit Details
Liverpool is one of several stops on the ship's 2026 European tour, which includes dozens of cities. Visitors can explore its cabins, displays, decks and hidden details, though steep stairs and ladders require care, especially below deck.
The Nao Santa María will remain at the Royal Albert Dock until August 25, with boarding from 10am to 8pm. Guests are advised to watch their step around small objects and restricted areas, which are clearly marked or roped off. Tickets can be booked through the vessel's official ticketing website.
