A British man has died and 27 others are in hospital after a bus carrying tourists crashed into a ravine on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands. The incident occurred at 1.15pm local time on Friday on the GM-2 highway near San Sebastián de La Gomera.
The bus was transporting a British tour group for a boat excursion, according to local media. Emergency services attended to 28 occupants – 27 British tourists and the driver. Officials confirmed one man died, and 27 people were injured, three seriously. The most seriously injured passenger was transferred to a hospital on neighbouring Tenerife, while the rest were treated at La Gomera hospital.
Among the passengers were 25 adults and three children. The driver is also believed to be among the injured. The Canary Islands president, Fernando Clavijo, expressed support for victims and their families. The British embassy in Madrid said it was ready to support British nationals and was in contact with local authorities.
Spanish police have launched an investigation into the crash, the cause of which has not yet been established. Last year, one woman died and 10 were injured in a traffic accident on the same road. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said her thoughts were with those affected by the tragic incident.
