A 60-year-old British tourist has died after being pulled from the sea at a beach in northern Crete. The man got into difficulty at Kato Gouves beach on Thursday afternoon and was brought ashore unconscious before being rushed to the General Hospital Venizeleio in nearby Heraklion, where he was pronounced dead, according to Creta Live News.
Investigation launched
The Heraklion Port Authority has launched a probe into the incident. An autopsy is also due to take place to determine the exact cause of death. The UK Foreign Office has been contacted for comment.
Previous incident in Zakynthos
Last month, a 34-year-old British tourist died after being pulled from the sea near Marathonisi, a small island off the coast of Zakynthos. Local reports said the man went to the area to swim before beachgoers noticed he was in difficulty and raised the alarm.
The man was brought ashore by officers from the Zakynthos Port Authority with the help of other beachgoers. He received CPR at the scene before being taken to Zakynthos General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Zakynthos Port Authority said in a statement that they were "informed of a 34-year-old foreigner (British citizen) in a difficult position near the Marathonisi area of Laganas, Zakynthos." They added: "With the assistance of beachgoers, he was transported to the shore where he was provided with first aid using the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) method."
The statement continued: "The 34-year-old was picked up by a patrol boat and transported to the port of Agios Sostis, Zakynthos. Subsequently, the man was taken to the Zakynthos General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Zakynthos Port Authority."
