Lloyds Bank is set to close 23 branches in October 2026, with the first closure in Rochdale on October 1 and the last in Braintree, Essex, on October 29. The closures are part of a wider reduction in physical bank branches across the UK as more customers switch to online and mobile banking.
Branch closure numbers and context
According to consumer group Which?, banks and building societies have closed 6,871 branches since January 2015, equivalent to around 53 every month. Lloyds Banking Group, which includes Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, has closed 1,611 branches over that period, more than any other banking group.
Which? says 116 Lloyds Bank branches are scheduled to shut during 2026. The 23 closures in October will be followed by another 10 in November, including branches in Accrington, Wallsend, Ilkeston, Willenhall, Liverpool, Wakefield, Worksop and Harrogate, as well as two sites in Leicester.
Bank's response and customer options
Lloyds says the way its customers choose to bank is constantly changing and that this can sometimes make it necessary to close or relocate branches. The bank said: "When making changes to our branch network, we always look to understand the impact on our customers - including how they continue to access banking services."
It adds that a Community Banker may sometimes visit an area after a branch closes, while an independent review can result in a Banking Hub or Deposit Service being established nearby. Lloyds has also said that customers have several other ways to access its services.
A Lloyds spokesperson previously told MoneyWeek: "With access to one of the biggest branch networks in the UK, alongside local banking options like our Community Bankers, the Post Office, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before."
Customers with Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland can also now use branches across the three brands for everyday banking.
