Two British children, aged 11 and 16, were injured when a steam room door suddenly shattered at a five-star hotel in Turkey, leaving them covered in cuts and with "blood everywhere". The incident occurred at the Green Nature Diamond Hotel in Marmaris, Dalaman, while the family were on holiday.
Incident Details
The children were emerging from the steam room when the door exploded, causing cuts to their feet, legs and arms. One child limped back to the hotel room, and a doctor at the hotel treated the injuries. CCTV footage captured the moment of the explosion.
The father, from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, described the scene as "carnage". He said: "We were in the hotel room when the eldest burst into the room. He was limping, and there was blood everywhere. When we got down there, it just looked like carnage. The door had exploded, and there was blood and glass all over the place."
Legal Battle and Compensation
Jet2Holidays initially denied liability but later agreed to pay £7,000 in compensation following a legal claim. The father had to fight for CCTV footage, which the hotel initially refused to provide. He eventually secured it after 10 months of pushing.
Anne Thomson, a senior litigation executive at Hudgell Solicitors, said: "The two boys suffered mild injuries, but this must have been a terrifying experience that stayed with them for a long time. The CCTV footage makes for especially uncomfortable viewing and underscores just how fortunate the brothers were to have avoided serious injury."
Impact on Family
The family avoided package holidays for four years after the incident. The father said: "The kids are still concerned about going through glass doors. You trust your tour operator to keep you safe. Jet2Holidays let us down."
Jet2Holidays said: "We would like to reiterate how sorry we are about this incident." The company added that it had reached a settlement in relation to an incident which occurred in 2022.
