The best extra virgin olive oils for UK shoppers have been ranked by the Good Housekeeping Institute, with supermarket own-brand products from Asda, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Aldi and M&S all making the list. The top spot went to Rise & Fall Polyphenol Rich Extra Virgin Olive Oil 500ml, which costs £25 and scored 94 out of 100.
How the olive oils were tested
A consumer panel tasted 45 types of extra virgin olive oil to determine the best available to UK shoppers. Each bottle was given a final score out of 100 after evaluation. The full list of the best products includes 21 olive oils for shoppers to try.
The winning organic Spanish olive oil was praised for its "exceptionally high polyphenol count" and its vibrant, "glossy-green" appearance. It also stood out for its rich aroma and peppery, rocket-like finish, with consumer experts noting the beautifully designed bottles that shoppers would likely keep long after the oil inside had been used.
Supermarket own-brand rankings
The first supermarket entry came in at number six: Waitrose No.1 Valli Trapanesi Olive Oil 500ml, priced at £13, was praised for its bold and vibrant flavours. An Asda product landed at number 10, while Lidl found itself at number 12 on the list. Sainsbury's was at 16, Aldi at 18 and M&S at 19.
Among the other top performers were Estoublon Picholine Extra Virgin Olive Oil (£49.99, 91/100), Citizens of Soil The Olive Oil Health Club (£30, 89/100), Gaea Kalamata Extra Virgin Olive Oil (£9.70, 89/100) and Tenute Cristiano Carolea Extra Virgin Olive Oil (£18, 87/100).
